Govt proposes opening more school for tribal kids & giving MSP to tribal products

 TOG News Service, NEW DELHI, FEB 16, 2018: THE Ministry of Tribal Affairs was allocated Rs 6000 Crores in this year's budget, in comparison to the Rs. 5329.32 Crores in the previous year's Budget, thus registering a 12% hike. Thereby, the Ministry plans to use this increased funding to set up more schools in tribal areas of the country so as to provide quality education to the tribal children, that too in their own environment.


To such end, the Ministry would be setting up an additional 562 Ekalavya Model Residential School (EMRS) in tribal areas in India. The Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, Mr Jual Oram, stated that 271 such schools had aready been sanctioned. Out of these, 190 schools were already operational. He further explained that these schools provide boarding and lodging facilities to tribal students and would be brought at par with the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyala through high quality education. An amount of Rs.241.60 Crore had been released to States during 2017-18 for meeting recurring cost of 190 functional schools where about 56000 Tribal Students are enrolled at the rate of Rs. 42,000/ student per annum.

The Minister also disclosed that 24 items of Forest Produce had now been given Minimum Support Price (MSP) which would substantially increase the income of the tribal population. Similarly, loans were been given to Tribal Self Help Groups thourgh National Tribes Finance Development Corporation, at low interest rate varying from 1% to 8%. As announced by the Finance Minister in his budget speech, more than Rs. 39000 Crore had been allocated for STs in 2018-19 under the Tribal Subplans Schemes.

Moreover, it was also stated that in the budget 2018-19, 5 new ministries had been included in the Scheduled Tribe Component (STC). Thus there were 37 Central Ministries and Departments having STC funds catering to specific tribal development in various sectors through 297 different schemes. The Ministry of Tribal Affairs would now monitor expenditure of these funds. For this, an online monitoring system has been put in place with web address . The Secretary to the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Ms Leena Nair, also stated that 21 Tribal Research Institutes were being set up and 11 museums of national importance for tribal freedom fighters were planned in different States. Infact, the foundation of the art Tribal museum has already been laid by Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi, in Gujarat.
