SC admonishes CBI, ED for slow progress in 2G scam probe
By TOG News Service
Mar 12, 2018

TOG News Service, NEW DELHI, MAR 12, 2018: THE Supreme Court of India today directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) to complete all pending cases relating to the 2G spectrum case. To complete such task, the Court gave the agencies six month's time, and directed that a status report be filed within two weeks, detailing the progress made. The Bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra reprimanded the investigating agencies for not completing the investigation in a timely manner.

The Bench expressed its displeasure regarding the pace at which the probe in the 2G spectrum scam was going, and expressed "shock" that the investigations were not complete despite monitoring by the Apex Court itself. The Bench stated that the matter had to be uncovered before the nation and that the public could not be kept in the dark, considering the seriousness of the matter.

Presently, the CBI and ED are probing the only Aircel-Maxis case arising out of the 2G spectrum scam allocation. In this regard, Mr Karti Chidambaram, the son of Ex Finance Minister Mr P Chidmbaram, is facing investigation regarding FIPB approval to this. The Apex court also directed that all the probe agencies file a status report within two weeks regarding the case progress in the matter. In the meanwhile, Mr Tushar Mehta would remain as the Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) in the 2G spectrum scam case. The court also let Mr Anand Grover relinquish charge. It also dismissed the contempt petition filed against the government for appointing Mr Mehta as the SPP.
